What Playgrounds Can Teach Us About AI in Schools
The playground had a metal slide, and his dad made it slicker with glass cleaner. Nathan Kraai grew up launching himself off that slide, and he thinks about it now as he decides when to introduce AI to his classrooms. Playgrounds got safer after 1970s injury data, but researchers warn adults confused eliminating hazards with eliminating risk. Children benefit from height, speed and a little fear. New York City banned AI through eighth grade; Los Angeles went further. Massachusetts instead teaches AI literacy. The verdict is playfully prudent: prepare children for an AI-saturated world without saturating their childhood with AI.
