Survey: Most Parents Want Students to Use AI in School — With Strong Safeguards
Parents want AI in the classroom. They just want it on a leash.
In a September survey of 1,528 parents (National Parents Union), 77% said they want K-12 public schools teaching students to use AI effectively, and 85% support teaching AI safety — but only 46% think their state is handling technology in schools well enough. Four in five want schools barred from buying technology not proven safe and effective, and 71% back banning AI chatbots during the school day. It is, as NPU co-founder Keri Rodrigues puts it, a job for ‘a scalpel, not a sledgehammer’.
The teachers, meanwhile, are improvising: fewer than a quarter say they have had adequate training to help students use AI, and 43% have had none at all.
Conclusion: parents are not anti-AI. They are pro-homework — for the adults.
