My Preschool Students Taught Me What Educators Lose in English-Only Programs
Caitlin Malloy learned the Italian expression boh, a shrug that means not knowing, resignation, scepticism and bemusement all at once, from her preschoolers in Italy. Her English-only school asked children to leave their home language, and she left the school. Now a proposed Trump administration rule would require Head Start programmes to teach only in English, undoing 2016 standards, though a third of under-fives are dual language learners bringing over 140 languages to class. The verdict is beautifully boh: the best teachers are the ones who let a three-year-old be the expert.
