AI inference startup Fal doubles its valuation to $16B as demand surges

Tuesday, 3 November 2026 · Source: TechCrunch Startups

Fal is not a software company. It is a landlord for other people’s AI models.

The San Francisco firm hosts and runs video, image and audio models — inference, the part after training, when a model actually has to do some work. It has just raised $1.3 billion in a Series F led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with Nvidia, Sound Ventures and T. Rowe Price joining in; the $16 billion valuation doubles the $8 billion of April, and Series E and F together total $1.65 billion (Sequoia led the earlier round).

Demand is doing the heavy lifting: Fal has passed $800 million in annualised revenue, largely from customers running open-source models. Rivals Baseten, Fireworks AI and Modal are growing just as fast — and raising just as much.

The catch is the rent. Gross margins stay thin because compute is ruinously expensive; every new customer is another hungry machine in the basement, and at this rate every video ever made will be generated, regenerated and generated again (sorry, planet).

Can you smell what the inference economy is cooking? Mostly hot servers and somebody else’s electricity bill! Fal was co-founded in 2021 by Burkay Gur (a former Coinbase machine learning leader and Oracle engineer) and Gorkem Yurtseven (previously a developer at Amazon).

Conclusion: Fal is not selling intelligence. It is selling the kitchen.
