How bionic eyes are becoming a reality
Science fiction is becoming eyesight. Bionic eyes can already restore some lost vision, though today’s are basic. The first implants offered only flashes: Retina Implant AG’s chip needed eight-hour surgery and folded in 2019, and Argus II, FDA-authorised in 2013, was discontinued the same year. Newer approaches look brighter. The Prima device, beaming images from spectacles to a chip under the retina, restored functional central vision to 81 percent of trial patients and is authorised in 30 European countries. The verdict is vividly visual: tomorrow’s eyes may zoom, sharpen and see in the dark, unless stem cells win first.
