Nine Medals, Four Schoolchildren, and India's Best Result Ever

Tuesday, 1 September 2026 · Source: Press Information Bureau (Government of India)

Nine medals, four schoolchildren, and the best result India has ever had at an Earth science Olympiad.

At the 19th International Earth Science Olympiad in Turin, held 20–27 August, India won four gold, three silver and two bronze medals against 39 countries — its highest haul in the competition’s history. Soumik Mandal of DAV Model School, Durgapur, took two golds and a silver and finished third in the overall individual ranking. Aaron Maiti won gold and bronze; Riddhi Ranjan gold and silver; Mohammed Ehtesham Rizvi silver and bronze.

The four were picked from some 17,000 national applicants and trained at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and Anna University, Chennai. The tests spanned written and practical examinations, a team field investigation and an Earth science project.

Conclusion: India did not just win medals in Turin, but rather found its footing — on ground it had never stood on before.
