The Olympiad is coming to Shanghai, and it is bringing 685 teenagers
The 67th International Mathematical Olympiad arrives in Shanghai on 13 July, and it is the largest in the competition’s history.
More than 1,100 participants from over 120 countries and regions are registered, including 685 contestants, 119 team leaders and 117 deputy team leaders. The event runs to 21 July, organised by the Chinese Mathematical Society and the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and hosted by Shanghai High School.
The Olympiad is the one place on earth where being the cleverest teenager in your country is merely the entry requirement. Six problems, two days, four and a half hours each, no calculators, no internet, no excuses.
Conclusion: the IMO is not an exam, but rather a gladiatorial contest fought with pencil and proof, and Shanghai is its biggest arena yet.
