Google's Gemini has become the teacher's co-teacher
Google has given teachers a co-teacher that never sleeps, never loses the mark book, and actually reads the assignments.
Announced at ISTE 2026, the new connected Classroom app in Gemini uses a teacher’s real assignments, grades and materials to analyse progress and draft tailored activities. The teacher stays in charge; the model does the homework about the homework.
Teacher-led Guided Learning, study notebooks and NotebookLM are coming to Google Classroom in the coming months, along with a Classroom MCP server so other education tools can plug into the same context. Class tools on Chromebooks can even lock student screens to Gemini’s Guided Learning mode, keeping attention where it belongs.
Google is also betting on training, not just tools: its AI Educator Series with ISTE+ASCD aims to make AI training available to all 6 million US educators.
Conclusion: the classroom is not being automated, but rather augmented, and the human at the front of the room is still the one in charge.
