A new certificate for the language of machines
Systems engineering has a new lingua franca, and now it has a certificate to prove you speak it. The Object Management Group has launched the official SysMLv2 Model User certification, the first credential for the next generation of model-based systems engineering.
SysMLv2 is not a modest update, but rather the most significant evolution of the standard in nearly twenty years. Formal adoption followed late in 2025, and the Model User credential is the entry point: it tests whether you can read and build models in the new language, rather than merely admire them from a safe distance.
The timing is no accident. Models are no longer diagrams on a wall; they are the system itself, shared across teams, suppliers and decades of service life. A shared language needs shared proof of fluency, and OMG is supplying it.
Next in line is the Model Builder Fundamental credential, expected in early 2027. For now, the message is simple: learn the language, or be left reading someone else’s model.
Conclusion: SysMLv2 is not a new notation, but rather the new grammar of engineering, and it now comes with an exam.
