Romania First in Europe, Second in the World

Tuesday, 5 May 2026 · Source: EGMO official scoreboard

Romania won Europe. China won the world. Brilliant Bordeaux supplied the arithmetic.

At the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad, held in Bordeaux from 9 to 15 April, Romania finished first among European teams and second overall, behind guest team China.

The Romanian team took three gold medals and one bronze. Aida Mitroi scored 26 points, Carina Maria Viespescu 24, and Mălina-Carla Pavel 30. Ioana Stroe added 14 points and a bronze.

China’s four contestants scored 36, 35, 35 and 42 points. That total left no argument.

Romania’s victory is European, not global. The distinction matters, and it flatters both sides: Romania beat every neighbour, China beat everyone.

Sixty-seven countries sent 260 contestants. Romania finished top of its continent. In mathematics, as in geography, second place can still be first at home.
