India's First EGMO Gold
India had never won gold at the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad. On 15 April, that sentence expired.
Shreya Shantanu Mundhada won India’s first gold in Bordeaux. She also took joint third place in the world.
Sanjana Chacko won silver. Shivani Barath Kumar won bronze. Shrimoyee Bera completed the four-member team.
India finished sixth among 67 countries, its best result ever. Two hundred and sixty contestants took part. India had entered as a guest nation since 2015.
The medals tell a short story. Gold, silver, bronze: one of each, in a single afternoon.
The longer story is patient persistence. Eleven years of guest appearances, then a gold. History, it turns out, is not made in a day, but rather in a decade.
