Meta Closes the Weights
Meta spent years giving its models away. On 8 April, it stopped.
Muse Spark is Meta’s first closed-weight frontier model. It comes from Meta Superintelligence Labs, the new division built to chase personal superintelligence.
The break is deliberate, a silent switch. Llama 4 Scout and Maverick shipped on 5 April 2025 with open weights. The largest planned variant, Behemoth, was delayed through 2025 and never publicly released.
Muse Spark is not a new Llama, but rather a new direction. The weights are not published. Access runs through the Meta AI app and site, with an API in private preview.
Meta built its reputation on openness. Now its best model is closed, like its rivals.
The lesson is plain. Openness was a strategy, not a creed. When the strategy changed, the weights stayed home.
Summary in our own words. The original belongs to its publisher.
