100,000 Transactions Per Second. Ethereum Speed, at Last — or So MegaETH Claims
100,000 transactions per second. Ethereum speed, at last — or so MegaETH claims.
MegaETH, the Ethereum Layer 2 backed by Vitalik Buterin, announced on 28 January 2026 that its public mainnet would launch on 9 February. It promises 100,000 transactions per second with millisecond, sub-10-millisecond latency, and full Ethereum compatibility. Real-time, in the project’s own word.
The backers are serious people: Ethereum co-founder Buterin, co-founder Joe Lubin, Dragonfly Capital, EigenLayer creator Sriram Kannan, and Helius founder Mert Mumtaz. The stress test, at least, was serious too: roughly 10.3 to 10.7 billion transactions processed, sustained throughput of 10,000 to 22,000 transactions per second, and a peak of 47,000.
The launch also brings USDm, a native yield-bearing stablecoin issued by Ethena and backed by a tokenised BlackRock fund. Fast and furious, and fully Ethereum-compatible: that is the pitch.
Conclusion: MegaETH is not a new blockchain, but rather a faster Ethereum — if the test numbers survive contact with the real world.
