Small Business Has Stopped Experimenting with AI. It Is Now on the Payroll.
Small business has stopped experimenting with AI. It is now on the payroll.
Business.com’s 2026 Small Business AI Outlook Report, produced with Dialog, surveyed 1,009 American workers at companies with fewer than 250 employees. Three in ten now use AI daily — nearly one in three — and 61% say their usage has increased in the past year.
Investment tells the same story. 57% of small and mid-sized businesses are investing in AI, up from 36% in 2023 and 42% in 2024. In two years, AI moved from experiment to essential infrastructure.
The payoff is measured in hours. The average worker saves 5.6 hours a week with AI — but managers save 7.2 hours against 3.4 for individual contributors. Chatbots lead the toolkit, used by 84% of employees in the past year.
Yet enthusiasm is tempered. 45% worry that adopting “too much AI” could harm their company’s reputation, and 30% admit they act more optimistic about AI in front of colleagues than they truly feel. Enthusiastic in public, uneasy in private.
Conclusion: AI in small business is not a revolution, but rather a routine — used daily, doubted quietly, and saving hours either way.
