Melbourne Honours Legends, Not Just Graduates

Tuesday, 2 December 2025 · Source: University of Melbourne

Verdict: Melbourne’s arts faculty knows how to pick its legends.

Eight alumni received Arts Alumni Awards from Dean Professor Jennifer Balint at the Arts Award celebration on 24 November. Two took the night’s highest honour.

Magda Szubanski AO received the Golden Alumni Award. She is one of Australia’s most loved actors, writers and activists, made an Officer of the Order of Australia in 2017 for her service to the performing arts and her campaigning for marriage equality.

The Golden Alumni Award also went to Eugenia Mitrakas OAM, a trailblazer in the Australian legal profession. She leads EMR Mitrakas, a practice serving Melbourne’s international community, and promotes Greek culture globally.

The other winners span leadership, giving and rising talent. Donata Carrazza and Dr Sangmin Nam took Leadership Awards. Dr Connie Buckingham won the Giving Award. Sabrina Leung, Marsha Lubovny and William Smith received Rising Star Awards.

A comedian, a lawyer, a UN director, a psychologist and three young changemakers. One faculty, one evening, and a reminder that an arts degree is not a detour, but rather a destination.
