The safety lab just bought itself a $183 billion price tag
Anthropic is not a startup, but rather a safety lab that outgrew private money.
On 2 September, the company closed a $13 billion Series F, led by ICONIQ and co-led by Fidelity and Lightspeed, at a $183 billion post-money valuation. Its run-rate revenue had grown from about $1 billion at the start of 2025 to over $5 billion by August. Claude, its assistant, is now used by over 300,000 business customers.
The paradox is the point. Anthropic was founded by former OpenAI staff who worried that AI was moving too fast on safety, and built its identity on Constitutional AI and a Responsible Scaling Policy. The market has now valued that caution at $183 billion — more than most car companies, for a firm that sells carefulness.
Firstly, the money buys compute and talent. Secondly, it buys independence: Anthropic trains Claude across AWS, Google Cloud and Azure, and no single patron owns its roadmap.
Conclusion: safety is not a brake on Anthropic, but rather its business model — safety sells, spectacularly.
